Crowne Plaza Changi Airport will be closed for two weeks from Friday (8 January) to 21 January after two staff members were confirmed to be infected with COVID-19.

In a daily update of the COVID-19 situation in Singapore on Thursday, the Ministry of Health said it is investigating two recent unlinked cases at the hotel.

The MOH reported on Thursday that one of the cases was confirmed to have COVID-19 a day earlier. She is a 43-year-old Malaysian woman, who is a work permit holder working at Azur, a food & beverage business at Crowne Plaza Changi Airport. Her job entails delivering pre-packed meals to air crew and hotel guests. She does not interact with diners at Azur.

On Wednesday, the MOH confirmed a 24-year-old male Korean national, who is a work permit holder working at Azur. The man was confirmed to have COVID-19 infection on Tuesday. He has also tested preliminarily positive for the potentially more contagious B117 strain, which has been spreading from the UK to a number of countries around the world.

“From our preliminary investigations, we cannot exclude that transmissions could have occurred at the hotel…The hotel will stop accepting new guests, and foreign air crew and guests currently staying at the hotel will be checked out progressively,” MOH said.

Incoming air crew will be housed in alternative facilities. Restaurant and event spaces within the hotel will be closed.

During its closure, the hotel will carry out deep cleaning and disinfection. MOH has also started a special testing operation to test all staff working at the hotel for COVID-19 infection.
