Oakland Restaurant Week is back, with a new emphasis for this coronavirus era and some specials honoring native daughter Kamala Harris.
With the pandemic hitting the food industry hard, the Visit Oakland organizers of the 11th annual event have added a new focus on the broader culinary community — roundups of caterers, food trucks, small markets, wine shops, breweries, cafes, pop-ups and coffee roasters that desperately need business to stay afloat. You can read, research and shop via the “where to find” lists at VisitOakland.com.
And, from Jan. 7-18, more than 50 restaurants, caterers and wineries are offering deals and special promotions but in a non-traditional fashion. With pandemic restrictions ruling out onsite dining, these are valid for takeout and delivery only.
Two participants are offering Kamala Harris specials.
Derreck Johnson, a longtime friend of Harris, is featuring a favorite dish of the vice president-elect. At his Home of Chicken and Waffles on Embarcadero West, the Kamala’s Collard Greens Chicken Lasagna special comes with salad, dessert and beverage.
And Local Food Adventures’ Lauren Herpich has put together a Kamala Harris Local Love Gift Box, which combines a package of Mom’s Scratch Recipe Corn Bread from Everett and Jones BBQ, tea from Papillon Quality Coffee, wildflower honey from the Oakland Honey Co., garam masala spice blend from Oaktown Spice Shop, a waffle coupon for the Home of Chicken and Waffles, plus an American flag to wave during the Jan. 20 inauguration.
